Why Grammar?
Often we think of grammar as a bunch of rules in a language that one needs to learn in order to master that language. People associate grammar with errors and correctness. Although, rules are indeed the foundation of any structure, the ultimate test of correctness of language is usage.
The ultimate goal of any language is to communicate. It is evident that if we have to understand each other correctly it makes sense to put down some ground rules. That way the speaker knows how to formulate her speech and the listener knows what to expect. In other words:
what you speak is what I hear. That the listener’s perception of a talk is as close as possible to what the speaker had intended it to be is probably because of the ground rules of a language. The ground rules of a language, or in other words the correct use of grammar, is indispensable to avoid miscommunication.
