About National talent search examination, NTSE 

ntse.pngNational Talent Search Examination or also popularly known as (NTSE) is conducted by NCERT every year for students studying in Class X, to identify and reward students with high intellect and academic talent.

It is the oldest and also the most prestigious talent search exam in India because it is sponsored by the government of India and also considered the toughest. 

  • Under the current scheme, NTSE scholarships are awarded to the candidates for pursuing courses in sciences and social sciences up to doctoral level and in professional courses like medicine and engineering up to second-degree level subject to the fulfilment of the conditions. 
  • The examination will consist of Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Ability Test (SAT)
  • Quota for State/UT will be computed proportionally on the basis of students enrolment in Class IX and X
  • 15% scholarships will be reserved for students belonging to the SC category,
  • 7.5% scholarships will be reserved for Students belonging to the ST category
  • 3% scholarships will be reserved for Physically Challenged Group of students.
Exam dates: 2nd Nov all over India and 1st Nov in Mizoram, Meghalaya, Andamans, nagaland          Registration deadline: 31st August

Eligibility Criteria for the National talent search examination, NTSE

Gender & Age  Both 
Region Indian students 
Classes  All students, currently studying in class X from recognized schools are eligible to take the stage I exam. There is no domicile restriction

Awards for the National talent search examination, NTSE

  • Eligible students will get Rs 1250 per month (Class 11 & 12)
  • Eligible students will get Rs 2000 per month (Graduation & post graduation)
  • The scholarship is expected to increase up to 4k-5k in next few years. 
  •  There are no restrictions like parental income, govt school, domicile etc. In case student visit abroad for studies the payment of scholarship will stop

Examination process for  the National talent search examination, NTSE


Stage I 
  • SAT: The syllabus for Mathematics, Science and Social Science will be broadly based on the prescribed respective State Board Syllabus from Std 9th - 10th class.
  • Few states like Kerala refer both state board and NCERT books while few states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh ask questions primarily from their state board books.
  • MAT: General questions Language: state board books covers a lot. More focus is on vocabulary, grammar and basic understanding. From 2013-14 there would be negative marking in NTSE second stage.
Stage II
  • Mental Ability test: 50 questions 50 marks, Language test : 40 questions 40 marks, Scholastic Aptitude test : 100 questions 100 marks ( 40 q from Science, 20 q from maths, 40 q from SST), SAT: The mathematics and science questions will be asked from the chapters in the syllabus of class 10th.The social science questions will be asked from class 10th.
